"Is the spring coming?" he said. "What is it like?"
"It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine..."
by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden.
We are finally defrosting into spring, and I couldn't be more excited. As much as I love winter and the cold weather, something about this time of year is so special to me… I think it’s because I love fresh starts, and spring is a renewal in the year. It’s all about second chances, about starting again after enduring the brutality of winter. And isn’t that so beautiful? I’m in desperate need of a fresh start, too. My year so far hasn’t been great. It has been exhausting. But gladly, there’s still time to change that, and I will seize this opportunity as best as possible.Â
Spring, for me, is when the year truly starts. It arrives not with a thunderous declaration but with a whisper: a soft murmur woven into the freezing earth, the soft green of flowers and trees pressed against winter’s retreating shadow. It lingers in the air, knocking on the winter’s door, carrying the scent of petails, a delicate fragrance like an old promise finally kept. Once full of sorrow, the sky stretches wider, painted in pale golds, as if exhaling after a long-held breath. And then, suddenly, it is everywhere.Â
Spring is the season of becoming, of in-betweens, where winter’s silence has not yet fully given way to summer’s noises, and the world exists in anticipation. It is a season of poetry, renewal, and second chances, written in petals and rain. It’s the season of lovers and first dates when you feel butterflies all over your stomach as they text you. It’s the season of books.
With that in mind, I prepared a seasonal reading list for you to enjoy during these months of birds, flowers, and sunshine. Let’s get to it.
ClassicsÂ
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett: transformative, heartwarming, introspective.
Emma by Jane Austen: satirical, charming, romantic.
